Uno-X Mobility started stage 5 of the Tour de France Femmes avec Zwift with six of their original seven riders still in the race. They ended the day with only three riders left.
Symptomatic of a race that has seen its fair share of accidents and drama, four of the Norwegian team’s riders were brought down in heavy crashes, with three of them abandoning.
Katrine Aalerud, 11th in the GC at the time, was brought down 22km into the stage, suffering suspected concussion. Ten kilometers down the road, at the first feedzone, Maria Giulia Confalonieri and Mie Bjørndal Ottestad both fell. The former suffered abrasions, and the latter a broken elbow – though she did finish the stage. Their teammate Linda Zanetti was held up by both crashes but was OK to continue.
A day earlier, Rebecca Koerner didn’t take to the start line due to illness, meaning that as the race heads into the high mountains, less than half of Uno-X’s original roster remain – and none of them are climbers.
“We’re basically losing everyone,” the team’s sports director Anna Badegruber told Velo after stage 6.
